An official record of an accident suffered by Jahanara, in which she was severely burned, demonstrates Shah Jahan's extreme affection for his daughter. The accident occurred in 1644. Jahanara's dress brushed against a candle and caught fire. For the next three days, alms were given to the poor, prisoners were released and prayers ordered by Shah Jahan. Nine months later, she recovered and Shah Jahan threw a party which lasted for a week. Her weight in gold was given to the poor and the Port of Surat given to her as a gift from her father. The physicians who attended her were also handsomely rewarded.
